I hate Halloween

There I said it! 

It's October 1st and I despise, dislike, abhore, loathe, detest, HATE the celebration of that so-called "holiday" of Halloween!

Don't give me that worn out argument that it's all in fun for the kids.  Nope.... I won't buy it.   Since when is it fun, (amusing, pleasurable, jolly, relaxing, agreeable, enjoyable...) to decorate with witches, skulls, blood and gore, bats, and other hideous creatures and objects?

Are horrifying and terrifying scenes & sounds from films cause for merriment and gladness?

Shall we teach our children to dress up as the Celts did to either placate or copy the evil spirits and shall we have our children beg for treats as those in Europe who begged in exchange for prayers for the dead?

Do we really think we should be celebrating a day set aside from it's earliest beginnings as an agrarian fertility and ancestral honoring festival;

A day where it was believed the barrier between the living and the dead was raised & they came together to feast;

And should we continue to celebrate the custom of giving not only food offerings to the "Land Spirits" (as the dead ancestors were called), but also "life-renewing blood" offering from the slaughter of livestock so to protect the home from malignant "fairy" influences. (fairy here means a spirit);

Is not God's creation of the earth enough?  Do we need to celebrate a day when part of the observance was for the High King to 're-create the world';

Should we participate in a day that included worship of the Land-Goddess and other divinities, all with ties to "the multiform Provider on whom we all depend, who must, like all things, replenish herself through alternating periods of action and repose, and who touches -- as we all must -- darkness and death to find the source of true renewal."


And you say the celebrating of Halloween is innocent fun.... Really??

A little homeschool memory trip

Back in our homeschooling days, there were days like this:

"...this is why i could never in a million years home school. because i would teach things like be kind, because karma can really mess with your stomach. and support other women...because if she's doing well, we're all doing well. don't be judgy, especially about tattoos. capital letters are unfriendly. too many ellipses are like bad wine...you'll feel it the next day. and sequins were made for sunshine. as for states? they're awesome. you should visit some. ugh."

Just like correct spelling... I'm all for it, if it comes naturally. At least some of the time. And there is nothing wrong with phonetically spelling. That's why computers come with spell-check.

But now we're done homeschooling by many years and both the boys are grown men, living productive lives and being useful members of society. I'm proud of them. They can even converse with other people and have never been socially-backwards.

But there are still days when I miss the thrill of learning about the times of moonrise or the calm hour of a read-aloud book or the frustration of multiplication drills. They were some of the best days.

Never too old to learn

Learning new things is always good. And I'm learning some html codes, learning about playlists, things like that.

Soon I want to find a free on-line basic digital photography class. I love my new camera and want to do more with it. Our local continuing ed classes offers this, but I have no free time in which to take those classes.

Today will be filled with cleaning the house, laundry, and then this afternoon, a Grain Truck Retrieval. No Nebraska game to listen to on the radio and I don't have any books on CD to listen to. It'll be along 2+ hours, following Farmer-Dear home. I'll have to pre-set the radio to all the Siruis talk stations. Martha Stewart, Fox Net, the "clean" comedy station.

Tomorrow I've already told F-d that I am hiding in my sewing room!! He's taken up most of my free time this past week with painting, mowing and other work. I'm going through fabric withdrawal!!

Oh and another new thing I'm learning.... Smiley Codes.... let's see if it works....

HA! YES!!! I did it!!
(had to relearn which codes work for this... brain hurts now....)

I'll be cutting & pasting over to Xanga for a while. Just so my old readers know... The smileys may not work over there. I won't be fixing them.
